SWITCH TO VAPING TO QUIT SMOKING – Asking for a friend

Today is world Friendship Day and I think we can all agree it would’ve been incredibly hard to get through lockdown without our friends and family around us. As we emerge out of lockdown, it’s important that we help each other and stay connected. How many of us have friends who want to quit smoking but don’t know where to begin?  Switching to vaping to quit smoking makes that journey easier and with a little help from a friend they stand a much better chance of success.

This week we’ve been focussed on the link between Smoking and Cancer. Smoking and Cancer go together like carrots and peas, but how does smoking cause cancer?

What if you, or a friend, wants to quit smoking? It’s not going to be easy, but with a little (well, a lot actually) help from a friend that journey will be a lot smoother. Engaging a friend (or family member) to help support that journey could be the difference between succeeding or not.  Public Health England found that a person was more than twice as likely to succeed if they benefited from behavioural and peer support.1

People assume that their addiction to Nicotine will be the hardest thing to overcome, but in fact the physical act/rituals of smoking are just as difficult to let go. What time of day do you smoke? Most people light up right after their first cuppa of the day, or at the end of the meal. Some people find it helps calm them to have a cigarette in hand. These are all behavioural rituals that add to the seductive power of a smoking addiction.

This is where a good friend can be of most help. Changing the time you take a break, where you go to eat, or just encouraging you to resist the urge to smoke. A friend can help keep you on track and support you when you’re struggling with a craving.

Reach out and help a friend get started on their quitting journey. We have created a dedicated programme called Switch to Quit which is designed to assist with the transition from smoking to vaping (an NHS approved quitting strategy) and to provide encouragement along the way with targeted support. But nothing is as powerful as a friend helping you get there.
